New Zealand Splash Class Association
New Zealand Splash Association’s aim is to foster the class and build confidence in youth sailing as well as giving the opportunity for adults to enjoy sailing this great class!
The 3.5 m boat is unique in that all boats are identical, so the sailor's ability rather than equipment shows through in fleet racing, held at club, national and international level.
The unstayed mono rig with a sail area of 5.5 m2 makes the class fun to sail and is easily handled by sailors ranging from 45 to 75 kg.
New Zealand Splash Association arranges many events during the season, ranging from the traveler's ranking series, training camps, coaching, national champs, and world selection trials .
Boats weigh 55kg and can be handled by most competent Opti sailors once they reach 45-50kg.
New boats cost $7995 but second hand boats are considerably cheaper and some clubs have schemes whereby sailors can charter boats until they decide to continue with the class.
A Splash is an ideal stepping stone between an Optimist and a Laser. Sailors range from 13 to 19 years old.
Splashes are also used as part of the Adult Learn to Sail programme at the Ponsonby Cruising Club.
The Splash is an ISAF international youth class yacht and each year a world champs is held.
Recent world championship venues have included Tavira, Portugal 2008, and Split, Croatia 2007. Ben Lutze of Taipa, Northland, was the 2008 World Splash Champion. Declan Burn of Picton was the 2009 World Splash Champion. Chris Steele of Auckland is the 2010 World Splash Champion.
The 2010 European champs are in;
Lelystad, Holland in 17-24 July.
